Because it is in a strategic location for those arriving in the country, ships from all over the world unload containers at this port. Within this perspective, the Port of Santos has a generous share of the Brazilian trade chain, representing 28% of trade and ranking as the main port in all of Latin America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its history dates back to very ancient times, even in the 14th century, when it became the strategic point of departure for sailors who went to trade with Portugal. From 1808, Porto began to be used in the private sector for the commercialization of coffee, when the Portuguese court opened the ports to foreign ships. However, its official opening took place only in 1892. At the turn of the 19th century to the 20th century, the Port of Santos had already established itself as the largest coffee exporting port in the world. However, only in 1980, with the end of the concession to the private sector, it became public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Annually, almost 5 thousand ships unload their containers in Santos, which has a capacity of 5.3 million TEUs per year, a unit equivalent to 20 feet, that is, the maximum capacity of a maritime container. Its total area is 8km\u00b2, where 54 terminals, 60 berths and 16km of berths are located. In addition, it is estimated that more than 50 thousand jobs are associated with the port's activities to support an operation of such magnitude and complexity. Currently, the Port of Santos is managed by the Santos Port Authority (SPA), a company that works with the Ministry of Infrastructure and in conjunction with other private areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its importance in the economy is so significant that the logistics of its surroundings have been modified as a result of its operations. For example, after the Pinheiros and Tiet\u00ea side roads were no longer peripheral roads, the Segundo Rodoanel (2002) was built, which brought more efficiency in the coming and going of loads. In 2005, changes such as the construction of the perimeter and the creation of truck parking in Cutab\u00e3o contributed directly to improving the region's logistics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cargo from all Brazilian states passes through it every day, being the largest exporting port of sugar, orange juice and coffee beans in the world. In 2020, the volume of exports exceeded 94.3 million. Last year, the highlight was bulk soybeans, which totaled 23 million tons, in addition to fuel oil and citrus juices. In terms of imports, which grew more than 10% last year, we can highlight fertilizers, which alone totaled more than 8 million tons. The ships that frequent the port are the famous common freighters, Roll On-Roll Offs, bulk carriers and liquid eir\u00f3s and oil tankers, which explains the fact that imports are concentrated in diesel oil. In addition to these, oceanographic, fishing, war and passenger ships also dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, despite its importance to the Brazilian and world economy, the Port of Santos faces many bureaucratic problems. Cargo is stopped for about 12 to 17 days longer than the world average, not to mention its infrastructure problems. In general, ports need constant investments to maintain a good operation, in this aspect Santos has been modernized over the last few years and has projects to expand, integrate and make more areas available for the coming years. With these improvements, it is possible that in the future the Port of Santos will be the main cargo distributor on the East Coast of Latin America, as it is currently responsible for more than 55% of Brazil's commercial transactions with foreign countries.
